The impact of GTL at the family and community level

Irene Adiel, a GTL alum, www.growththroughlearning.org completed high school in 2010 and went on to study Business in college and graduated college in 2013.  She owns a tour company based in Arusha, Tanzania.  She says that business has declined due to the pandemic but she remains hopeful that things will get better as Tanzania gets a handle on the situation.  

Irene has 8 siblings, and has a father who, as many do in East Africa, believed that it was more important to give boys a formal education, and have the girls pursue marriage and bearing children.  Irene has two beautiful daughters Cherish, two years old and Comfort, six years old.

Comfort is in Grade 1, seen above doing some of her homework, while Cherish is imitating her. She can count from 1 to 10 in English. ‘She is a clever one,’ says Irene.

Irene aspires to create a conducive environment for her girls to grow up, and to believe that they are capable of doing and pursuing any career of their choice and are equal to boys. The East African countries continue to battle against Covid-19. The latest news is that Kenya has 2,895 total deaths, Uganda has 334 while Tanzania has 509 recorded deaths and does not provide Covid-19 data any more. ( Source; Wikipedia, JHU CSSE Covid-19 Data ).  Phase 1 of vaccination has been done in Kenya and Uganda with emphasis on essential service workers and the elderly.  Tanzania’s President, Suluhu Hassan has deployed tough measures against the pandemic in just two months since she arrived in office after the passing of her predecessor, John Magufuli.  She has taken an entirely different approach from her predecessor and is hopeful to make up for lost time in the fight against the pandemic.
