A Big Hello to Mary Nabalayo

I received an email from Sister Salome in Uganda this morning that one of her students had shown up early–really early–to school from the end-of-year break: “Can you guess who it is?” she writes. Sure enough, my friend Mary Nabalayo (or Nabalayo Mary as she would say), is back and ready to go. If you have been reading this blog for a while then you might remember Mary from the rather dramatic the tree climbing incident, now famous around our office.

Mary is all recovered now, and she was concerned that her return to school might be delayed by the usual packed buses and vans as Ugandan students head back for the new year. So she made absolutely certain to be there on time by beating the entire country back to school. Never stand in the way of a determined young woman from Karamoja.

If Sister Salome has it right, Mary, you are feeling a little at loose ends waiting for everyone else to reappear. Hang in there… send us a note if you get a chance. And welcome back!

We can’t wait to see you in September.
